From Their Eyes Were Watching God

“It was inevitable that she should accept any inconsistency and cruelty from her deity as all good worshippers do from theirs. All gods who receive homage are cruel. All gods dispense suffering without reason. otherwise the would not be worshipped. Through indiscriminate suffering men know fear and fear is the most divine emotion. it is the stones for altars and the beginning of wisdom. Half gods are worshipped in wine and flowers. Real gods require blood.”

– Zora Neale Hurston

  1. It sounds good to me. God’s relationship with man is like an abusive relationship. Beating the crap out of man in the old testament and then is all apologetic, forgive always, I’m a changed god in the new testament.

  2. “The fact is that the cross isn’t a form of cosmic child abuseā€”a vengeful father, punishing his son for an offense he has not even committed. Understandably, both people inside and outside of the church have found this twisted version of events morally dubious and a huge barrier to faith. Deeper than that, however, is that such a construct stands in total contradiction to the statement “God is love.” – Steve Chalke

Sums up my thoughts pretty well. But I’m pretty ignorant of all the events of your life so I might not know something about God that you do Scott.
